Intro to Physiological Psychology

One of the topics that was brought up on our assigned reading was the topic of  animal testing. I have encountered this topic before but I haven't given any thought of how I feel about animal testing.

I've spent hours contemplating my position in this argument. It's every easy to say that animal testing is unacceptable, because of how the animals were treated in the laboratories where the test were conducted, and its must be stop. But at the same time, a part of me is saying that animal testing is a good thing since almost all of the medical advancement we have today, from finding out the cause of many diseases to the perception medications that some of us take, were made possible through animal testing. I guess you can say that I am for animal testing but only for medical purposes

As we all know, animal testing does not just limit itself in the medical field but it has made its way through cosmetics. I believe testing cosmetics on animals is pretty pointless to us. It seems to me that these kind test are done so they could see how good or bad their product is and what  can they do to improve their product.

This video by Lush, a cosmetics company, is a propaganda against the use of animal testing on cosmetic products. The video is graphic so "viewer discretion is advised."

Animal testing will always be one of those issues that everybody has their own point of view. What are your thoughts on animal testing?

  1. I agree. Animal testing is a very complex subject to pick one side. Both views provide valid points that make either view correct. I sat there contemplating as well and pretty much came to the same conclusion. I mean think about it. If NO testing was done on animals for medical purposes like the book mentioned there would be a huge set back on medical advances and research. Since it is argued that animals can't give their consent to be part of research, animals would never "say" yes so they wouldn't be tested on. People are concerned for animals but how would they feel about ONLY humans being tested on? Even if consent was provided it would soon grow into a touchy subject. Not every one will be happy with whatever is done, but I do believe it is essential to do minimal animal testing (for medical purposes) to better understand ourselves and the animals themselves. I feel I should note that if animal testing is needed, the comfort of the animal should be taken into consideration through out the process.

like that you mentioned the cosmetic industry and how animals are tested on. Animal testing in cosmetics is done to view the safety and reactions of products. Thinking about this point, I could see why it would be done. You wouldn't want to put lotion on and flare out in a rash or something else that could be harmful for you.

I personally don't agree animals should be subject to animal testing regardless. I believe in animal testing to a certain limit. This is were I draw the line.

To summarize, I to agree with the writer of the blog. Animal testing should be done minimally and ONLY for medical research.

  2. It seems like everybody had a lot to say about animal testing and it is a great topic to think about. I personally loved the video you posted I thought it was so good and really very informative. I particularly enjoyed the lush director's fiery orange hair (kidding). Joking aside, I definitely do agree with animal testing being done for medical research only and going to what Yaritza said there's a good reason it is being done and I'm not sure everybody realizes that. I'm sure that if people would rather their kids or themselves contract these various diseases or scientists to test on animals to find the cure or vaccine, I think they would choose the first choice. I know not everyone is the same but I think there's just some people that need to think about it the other way around, for example if scientists and doctors had never used animals for testing in the first place. People would still be getting polio or smallpox. Like the book said, some would like to put an end to animal research. Obviously, these people don't have cancer, heart disease, or AIDS.
